Shantelle Rodriguez

The Immersive Art Curator

You may think you know what the art world is like, but you’ve never seen Shantelle Rodriguez’s version.  After earning a Masters in Art Business from Sotheby’s Institute of Art in New York over a decade ago, Shantelle returned home to Miami and has been busy staging immersive masterpieces as the director of the experiential art center, Superblue. The broad brushstrokes of her career have included envisioning and executing a diverse artistic and cultural landscape in South Florida by forging meaningful ties and partnerships between the local community and world-renowned art stars. Shantelle has worked with a who’s-who list of experiential artists disrupting traditional artworld models. She also boasts a deep and personal understanding of the regional and international art scenes thanks to her former position as Director of Arts for Goldman Global Arts, where she was in charge of curation and production efforts for famed Miami arts destination, Wynwood Walls.

Projects

With Superblue Miami‘s 31,000 square feet of flexible installation space, Shantelle has plenty of room to offer immersive artists like James Turrell, Es Devlin and teamLab (fellow XLIST honorees). Recently, she showcased the work of Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, whose “Pulse Topology” installation’s 3,000 suspended light bulbs formed inverted undulating mountains and valleys and gently pulsed to the recorded sound of the heartbeats of past participants. Superblue isn’t just limiting itself to Miami; the goal is to have satellite locations around the world. A good start: “Fragile Future,” a collaboration with New York’s The Shed and multidisciplinary artists DRIFT that combined sound, film, and movement. Before turning her attention to Superblue, Shantelle launched the Goldman Global Arts (GGA) gallery at the Wynwood Walls, eventually taking over oversight of the entire art destination, which now draws millions of worldwide visitors each year.
